I adore the warm timbre that emanates from a big band playing at its most subdued. Walkin’ Tiptoe, for example, really comes into its own right when the wind sections plays so softly that the muted trumpet rises above it without extra amplification.
I recorded it with Brussels Jazz Orchestra in 2001 on the double CD ‘Brussels Jazz Orchestra – The Music of Bert Joris’. I play the melody and improvise as first soloist, Marc Godfroid plays the trombone solo.
